The WayBack Machine is the Internet's very own Archive. The majority of the worlds webpages are included in the archive, dating back to the 1990s.
Why check the WayBack Machine?
If a company is included in the Internet Archive, it means they've been around longer. This generally means the company isn't some "fly by night" host which disappears as fast as it appeared.
Is this a fail-safe method of selecting a web host?
No. Just because it does appear in the Archive, doesn't mean they wont be unreliable. And, just because they don't appear, doesn't mean they will be a scam. Every company started somewhere.
How do I check the WayBack Machine's Archive of web hosts?
Each web host contains an individual link to the Archive.org website. From there, you'll be able to browse the website throughout it's history. If the host is old enough, you might even find 90's web designs (we're sorry in advance for that :)).
